Ocon: “Twice seventh at Suzuka is pretty good”

Esteban Ocon (Racing Point Force India) could make the number 7 its lucky charm in Japan. The Frenchman actually finished the two Friday sessions at Suzuka in this place, which gave him the honorary rank of “best of the rest”, behind Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull.

Even though it is within a good draft of Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes, +1”8 and +1”9 ahead in FP1 and FP2), the 3 GP2015 Series champion showed a genuine smile in the Japanese paddock. “Two times seventh is pretty good. I'm quite happy, the car is solid especially since we know we will be faster tomorrow. »

The one who still has no F1 contract for 2019 sets the objective of collecting big points on Sunday, on a track that he likes. « This circuit is adapted to my driving style. You have to have confidence in the car, not be afraid to approach the grass at the side of the track. It's also a track with little braking, and that suits me. Turns like this work well for me » he analyzes.

As is often the case this year, Racing Point Force India will have to monitor the Haas, starting with that of Romain Grosjean. “Romain was the closest to me (8e), we know that Haas will fight with us until the end of the season. We will try to beat her, even if we didn't succeed last week in Russia. »

Finally, Esteban Ocon says he is satisfied with the aero package taken to Singapore at the end of September. The new flat bottom as well as the modified parts on the bodywork (deflectors in particular) have their effect. « We should have released it a little earlier in the season. It works very well, it's just a shame that the package arrived so late. There are still quite a few challenges left (five) so we're still going to enjoy it. »
