This is a hard blow for fans of Formula 1. In one sentence, written in a press release published Friday June 12 in the morning, three Grands Prix disappear from the 2020 calendar: Japan, Azerbaijan and Singapore.
“This decision was taken because of the different challenges faced by promoters in these countries, indicates F1. In Singapore and Baku, the long delays required for the construction of temporary city circuits made holding these events impossible in this uncertain period”, linked to the coronavirus crisis.
« In Japan, travel restrictions current events also led to the organization of the event not being continued. » If Singapore, the first night race introduced in 2008, and Baku (arriving in 2016) have not yet entered the legendary sporting events due to their youth, the trip to the land of the Rising Sun constitutes a real historical milestone in the F1.
Indeed, it will be the first time in 44 years that the single-seaters will not go to Japan, Mount Fuji having hosted the first Grand Prix round in this island state in the fall of 1976.
Formula 1 also indicates that it has been “particularly encouraged by theinterest expressed by new circuits in the idea of hosting a race in 2020 ". This concerns thee Mugello (Italy), owned by Ferrari, Hockenheim (Germany) and Portimao (Portugal).
A calendar spread over “15 to 18 races” is expected to be announced before kick-off in Austria during the first week of July. As Ross Brawn revealed earlier, Abu Dhabi will serve as the grand finale in mid-December 2020.
