The Mercedes boss believes that it is impossible to make predictions for the second half of the 2018 season because the forces involved change from one weekend to the next.

“Not always the fastest car wins” – Toto Wolff

The Belgian Grand Prix this weekend (August 24-26) marks the start of the school year in Formula 1 and the reigning four-time world champion team approaches it in the lead in both rankings, with 24 and 10 points respectively among the Drivers and Manufacturers.

Si Mercedes started the current campaign with the best car, Team Ferrari quickly rose to the level of its German rival before gradually gaining the upper hand thanks to a powertrain that is in great shape.

Curiously, neither of the two title contenders really knew how to exploit their strengths: Mercedes lost races that seemed destined for them in Australia and Austria due to strategic errors and mechanical problems; Ferrari, for its part, let victories slip away in Germany and Hungary just before the break, the first due to a mistake by Sebastian Vettel under the rain.

If the long periods of full load at the Spa-Francorchamps Circuit should flatter the characteristics of the SF71H and its very efficient engine on paper, Wolff prohibits any prediction.

« It is very difficult to know what will happen in Belgium, said the boss of the Silver Arrows. If this season has taught us one thing, it is that there is no announced favorite for this or that circuit, and that it is not always the fastest car that wins.

Instead, the dynamic shifts from one camp to another from circuit to circuit. Our competitors are working hard and giving us a fierce fight. It's up to us to keep our heads in control, to make the necessary efforts to eliminate our weaknesses and build on our strengths, all while taking the races one after the other. ».

Or how to string common places like pearls. Looking forward to the resumption of joy in the Belgian Ardennes this weekend!
