Paul di Resta: “Nothing surprised me”

About ten hours ago, Paul di Resta certainly didn't expect to get into the seat of Felipe Massa's FW40 this Saturday in qualifying. If the Brazilian, suffering since free practice 2, had undergone check-ups at the hospital, Williams Martini Racing expressed confidence in the participation of the 2008 world vice-champion in free practice 3 and following the Hungarian weekend.

However, shortly after FP3, the Grove team announced that Paul di Resta would take the place of Massa, still ill, for the rest of the weekend. A last-minute replacement which will allow the Briton to return to the starting grid of a Grand Prix for the first time since Brazil 2013.

“The last eighteen hours have been hectic, preparing to drive in case this happens, but still with real uncertainty,” admits di Resta. I was nervous. You are not sure of your ability. I was preparing my shirt at 11 o'clock this morning (di Resta officiates for Sky Sports F1) »

The old pilot DTM admits, however, that he had no big surprises when taking his place in the seat of the FW40, he who was able to take advantage of his position as Williams reserve driver to receive the best possible preparation to deal with any eventuality.

“Honestly, I quickly felt very comfortable in the car. There was nothing that surprised me. But the more you ride, the better. Being entered directly into qualifying is the most extreme of extremes. Completing these four laps was a tough task, but honestly, I didn't expect to be so close right away. »

Paul di Resta set the 19th time in 1’19″868, 0″766 behind the Canadian Lance stroll, holder since the start of the season.
