Tied finishers on the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi, Sergio Pérez (Red Bull) and Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) were going to be decided during this last event of the 2022 season of Formula 1. Everything started well for the Mexican, second behind his teammate Max Verstappen during the first relay.

Unfortunately for him, Scuderia Ferrari tried a gamble for the end of the race. While his team called him back to the pits for his second stop, Sergio Pérez saw Charles Leclerc continue his journey without changing tires. A daring choice, but one that paid off.

Indeed, the Mexican was supposed to be able to catch up with the Ferrari by the finish, which was not completely the case. Under the checkered flag, the Red Bull was 1″3 behind the Ferrari. “It's like that, sometimes it ends very close but I have to be happy with this year. I gave everything, the team gave everything throughout the season and we will come back stronger next year”, he promised.

With hindsight, the position that Max Verstappen refused to give up to him at the Brazilian Grand Prix the previous week would not have changed the order of the final general classification. “We had very good moments, great battles, continued Sergio Pérez. We had to manage the tires a lot this year, and I hope that's something we can improve on to be stronger next season. »

His boss, Christian Horner, describes Sergio Pérez's year as “a huge season. He accomplished a lot, a pole in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), a victory in Monaco, in Singapore and five doubles behind Max (Verstappen). The combination between him and Max allowed us to win the Constructors' Championship for the first time in eight years. We are the first team to inflict a defeat on Mercedes, he can be very proud of his season.”

Enough to put out the Interlagos fire once and for all? Answer in 2023.
