Pérez: “With development we can fight with McLaren”

2019 will not have been as fruitful for Sergio Pérez and Racing Point F1 that 2018, the year when the team previously owned by Vijay Mallya, was bought by a consortium of investors led by Lawrence Stroll, father of Lance.

Author of a podium in 2018, the Mexican was not able to repeat his performance, only achieving a sixth place as his best result last year. 7th in the Manufacturers' standings, Racing Point is also far from the luster of the 2016 and 2017 seasons, where the structure finished the seasons in 4th place.

According to Sergio Pérez, who will begin his seventh year with Racing Point and has re-signed for three seasons, the team can return to this level and come to scrap with McLaren. « If we stick to our development goals, we can fight with them, comments the former McLaren driver on Auto Motor und Sport.

I'm looking forward to this. We can look forward to 2020 with confidence. Right now, every team is clearly optimistic about the year ahead. It doesn't matter where you start, but more where you end. »

Pérez sees even further than just the fight with McLaren. “I hope that in 2020 we will not only fight with McLaren, but also be much closer to the top teams. »

Racing Point F4 only reached the top 1 once last year thanks to Lance Stroll, during the German Grand Prix with an incredible scenario.
