Pérez brushes off Vettel rumor at Aston Martin

Just back in the paddock F1 after his negative Coronavirus test, Sergio Pérez once again had to face questions from journalists concerning his possible replacement at Racing Point/Aston Martin by Sebastian Vettel in 2021. Remember that the Mexican has a contract with the Silverstone structure (United Kingdom) until 2022.

Obviously happy to be back as a starter, Pérez had fun with the rumors and anecdotes involving the future ex-pilot Ferrari and Lawrence Stroll (the two men elbowed each other in the pit lane in England), and Otmar Szafnauer (Vettel got into the American's Ferrari Pista after the British GP to go to a gas station).

« Otmar is very proud to own a Ferrari, the Mexican reacted calmly from Barcelona where he will get back behind the wheel of his RP20 this weekend. What do I think about the situation? Nothing special. Everyone is free to do what they want, even more so outside the circuit. Same with the elbow salute with Lawrence.

From what I heard from the team, there is a desire to continue the adventure together. It's only a matter of time before the rumors dissipate ».

Asked if he had spoken with other teams to find a possible base, Pérez responded in the negative.

« I haven't spoken to anyone else because my position on the team seems secure, he argued. This is the feeling I have when interacting with them in any case. ».

  • Happy to get back to your favorite activity

After 2 races on the sidelines, Pérez is preparing to resume his F1 career. The man from Guadalajara admits to having found the time long during his quarantine carried out near Milton Keynes (UK), especially when he watched the races on television.

« I am very happy to be back and to resume my favorite activity after going through a complicated periodhe said. I was lucky to only have mild symptoms, a few headaches and severe fatigue for 2-3 days. I could have driven from the 2nd round at Silverstone in the event of a negative screening but that was not the case.

It was weird watching a Formula 1 Grand Prix instead of participating in it. Honestly, I found the experience a bit boring, especially the 1st race at Silverstone, apart from the last few laps. The 2nd round was more interesting with the different tire strategies. It was more entertaining.

I haven't ridden for 2 races so I don't know if my physical condition is optimal. The best possible training is to drive the car. From that point of view, I'm not 100% but that shouldn't be a problem. Since the virus did not affect me too much, I was able to continue training almost normally ».

When we see that his former Force India teammate Nico Hulkenberg got back into the swing of things very quickly after 8 months of inactivity, we're not too worried about Pérez, even if we still don't know a lot about the long-term after-effects of the Coronavirus.
