Pérez: “Never so long away from a steering wheel”

Sergio Pérez has not taken the wheel of the Racing Point RP20 since the Barcelona winter tests in February. The Mexican will finally be able to put his helmet back on with the Austrian GP contested on July 5 at Red Bull Ring after a period of inactivity of 4 months.

“We started our training this week, my coaches are with me. It is already expected that the recovery will be difficult by returning directly to racing, he confided, quoted on the F1 website. We've never been away from a steering wheel for so long. It will be very physically demanding and I am working hard on it. I'm happy to finally have a resumption date. I've never stayed home this long since I was 11 or 12. I was able to enjoy it, but I miss the competition, the driving, the adrenaline, my teammates, my team. »

Patience is all the more difficult for Sergio Pérez to bear as the RP20 had displayed promising performances during winter testing by incorporating many elements of the Mercedes W10 from the 2019 season.

“You obviously want to race when you have a good car in your hands. We want to be on the circuits every week, added the Mexican. More than the victory or the podium, it's before the race that motivates me. I miss all these sensations linked to competition. »
