Perez: new DRS zone won't change anything

The Albert Park track has a third activation zone for the mobile rear wing, located between turns no. 11 and no. 13. Asked about the new configuration, Perez do not think it offers any additional overtaking possibilities.

« Considering where they placed the new DRS zone, it won't make any difference, did he declare. You come out of a fast section, you will get closer to the car in front of course but you continue with a slower section where you already had a tendency to catch up with your competitors before the DRS of the straight line ».

Other pilots, on the other hand, consider the change welcome. “ It will remain complicated to overtake, points out Kevin Magnussen. But it will help us a lot in the race. » Same story for the regional stage, Daniel Ricciardo. " I don't think it could do any harm, notes the Australian. Overtaking is not evident around Albert Park. And as we go faster and faster, the difficulty of following another car increases. I'm not sure the new zone necessarily creates more opportunities but it can put you in a good position to attack further. »

Later in the day, FIA race director and technical manager Charlie Whiting suggested that other circuits would receive similar changes this season.
