To use the witticism of one of our British colleagues, this is not the first time that Sergio Pérez has lost a place this week…
The Mexican was in fact found guilty of the collision involving him with Kimi Räikkönen during Free Practice 2 of the Tuscan Grand Prix.
The incident took place as Pérez was leaving the pit lane. The pilot Alfa Romeo then arrived launched and was caught by the future ex-Racing Point rider at right rear, spinning off after the contact.
Before the panel of stewards, Pérez defended himself by arguing that he was aware of the Finn's arrival but pointed out the length of the pit exit at Mugello. He explained that he had already reached a high speed when entering the first corner.
In their report, the stewards stressed that they had studied the precedents, such as the incident between Romain Grosjean et Valtteri Bottas in Abu Dhabi last year. Instead of inflicting a drop of 3 places on the grid, which would have been the standard sanction in such circumstances, they reduced the severity of the penalty due to " extenuating circumstances ».
In addition to having to move back one place on the grid on Sunday, Pérez also had a point removed from his license.
