Piastri, dominant in Miami: “We must always learn”

A safety car intervention deprived him of a sprint race victory this Saturday, but Oscar piastri recovered in the best possible way by winning at the wheel of his McLaren in Miami this Sunday. Starting in fourth position, the Australian took advantage of the eventful start between Max Verstappen et Lando Norris to place himself in second position in the first laps, behind the Dutchman. Once he managed to find the opening on the Red Bull, nothing could stop the Australian.

“I won the race I really wanted to win! Saturday was a tough day, in qualifying I had my toughest session of the year I think. To still be able to win on Sunday is impressive. There was a bit of a mess at the first corner, which helped me, and then I managed to avoid Max by passing him in the first corner. From that moment on, I knew I had the advantage in terms of pace, the car was incredible today.”

However, the Perth native himself adds a slight caveat, concerning his second stint, on hard tires. While he started it with a lead of almost eight seconds over Lando Norris, the Briton closed in until he was only 3 seconds behind his teammate. Piastri managed to counter this comeback at the end of the race, but while the two members of the Woking team will certainly fight for the title this year, every element of the race counts, and the young Australian driver intends to continue learning to improve and maximize every opportunity.

“The first stint was very good, but I struggled on the hard tires. So it was good to have built up that advantage at the beginning of the race. By the end of the race, I had everything back under control a bit, but there are still things I need to work on. I'm very happy to have scored the points and taken the victory, but you always have to learn.”

The world championship leader finally wanted to salute his team, which has climbed the grid in less than two years to become the number 1 force in Formula 1 : "The work of the whole team is incredible. We were the slowest in the field two years ago here in Miami, and today we win by 35 seconds. It's fantastic. It's thanks to the work of everyone, here on the track but also at the Woking factory."

The Perth native? Ricciardo is from the big city in Western Australia, while Piastri is, if I'm not mistaken, from Melbourne!

And he's allowed to play the modest one too! Let's just hope Norris gives him a bit of a hard time so the season isn't over too quickly.
