Piastri not interested in the Indy 500: "These guys are crazy!"

He had barely taken the lead in the world championship Formula 1 for the first time in his career thatOscar piastri is already receiving questions about his future! On the occasion of the arrival of the great Formula 1 circus at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, ESPN (official broadcaster of F1 in the United States) asked the Australian about the Indianapolis 500. The 109th edition of the Indiana classic will take place on May 25, the same day as the Monaco Grand Prix. The example of Fernando Alonso, who has tried his luck three times for two participations in the race, is not exactly the one that Piastri would like to follow in the future...

“No, it’s not for me. Firstly, my dreams and goals have always been in F1. I’m very happy to be there at the moment. And secondly, these guys are crazy! The speeds they reach, so close to the walls… you really have to have a lot of trust in the drivers around you.”

Michael Schumacher in his time or the four-time reigning world champion Max Verstappen have already explained that they are not tempted by the American adventure. Oscar Piastri also sees this from a safety point of view, the 33 single-seaters covering the 800 kilometers of the race between the walls at an average speed of over 350 km/h. The number 81, however, remains an attentive spectator of the Indy 500, once its race is finished in Monaco!

“Having an accident in a Formula 1 car, at the speeds we go, it hurts. If you add 35 or 40 km/h, knowing that they are already going 30 km/h faster in average speed than our top speed… It’s not a question of whether it will hurt, it’s a question of how much it will hurt. I’m very happy with my car and my Formula 1 circuits, and I’m very happy to watch the Indianapolis 500.”

To see if his teammate Lando Norris, who has already admitted that he wants to participate in the Indy 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans later in his career, will make him want to try the adventure. The Briton already has experience on the Speedway in virtual, when he participated in the races organized by theIndyCar on iRacing, during the first lockdown in 2020.
