Driving in the streets of Monaco always represents a perilous exercise for the drivers of Formula 1. This year, succeed in achieving a good result with your car could prove even more difficult with the risk of rain this Sunday, May 27 in the Principality. Arriving in 6th position last year, Pierre Gasly is ready to brave the elements during the Grand Prix. “ I'm really excited! I have the images of Panis in my head, that's the only thing, underlines the pilot Alpha Tauri. It's complicated, but I see it more as an opportunity. We know, if it's dry and once the qualifier is done, that apart from two places it's quite limited »

The jewel of the Formula 1 calendar is not always synonymous with a great spectacle with little overtaking on the winding streets. But the rain could redistribute the cards in Monaco. " With these cars, in the dry it will be complicated but in the rain it will be something quite physical. But I'm excited by the challenge. We only drove at Imola in the rain, but due to the regulations it's a little more complicated than before. On a track like Monaco it can be a bit folkloric. The car is heavier, stiffer, and we have less damping. »

In Monaco, the French driver will try to complete the Grand Prix without incident after having experienced numerous problems this season. “ We really need to be able to have clean weekends. For the moment, the six weekends we've had are six weekends where things always happen to us: either mechanical glitches or incidents during the race. It's true that it impacts us on the final result on Sunday », Points out Pierre Gasly.

More complicated for Pierre Gasly with the AT03

With a more capricious and less efficient AT03, the Normand is less visible in the middle of the peloton. “ Today, we are aware that our performance is not at the level of last year, not at the level we would like. There are a lot of teams that have made progress. But aside from that, compared to last year, we don't help ourselves every weekend with what we do and the problems we have »

However, within the Italian team, optimism was the order of the day after the early season tests in Barcelona. “ What's strange is that we had the best winter tests in the history of the team, so if we were confident about one thing, more than performance, it was our reliability. And for now, I would say that has been our weak point since the beginning of the year. »

With only 6 points on the clock this season, Pierre Gasly may have regrets about his failed start to the season. “ I could easily have 12 or 14 points more, with Bahrain and Miami. Unfortunately, that's how it is. It's definitely annoying, after a while it becomes a little boring because I want to score. It's good to be fast in free practice, in qualifying, but in the end it's also the points that count. I continue to try to pull the team up because we need it, and we have more competition than last year » Dominated by Yuki tsunoda since the start of the season, Pierre Gasly can come back to his teammate this weekend on a track which did not favor Nippon, 16th in 2021.
