This is simply Gasly's best result in Formula 1 in qualifying. The Norman started second on the grid for the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix, but he benefited that day from several penalties in front of him, after qualifying fourth. Third in the last Grand Prix in Brazil behind his teammate Esteban Ocon, Pierre Gasly continues his very good run, even if he did not expect to reach such heights in the ranking in Las Vegas, a circuit where the car French has been performing very well since the start of the weekend.

“It’s really incredible. We didn’t think we could finish third in qualifying. It was a really special lap, especially on this circuit where you’re flirting with the walls all the time, it gives you a lot of adrenaline. I knew when I crossed the line that it was a good lap, but when they told me on the radio that I was going to start third I was surprised but very happy.”, he told F1 after the session.

In far from ideal conditions, with a street circuit that gains grip from session to session despite very low temperatures, the Frenchman managed to set the right lap at the right time. Present since the start of the weekend in around sixth to eighth positions, Gasly managed to extract the maximum from his car to line up behind poleman George Russell, and Carlos Sainz.

“I was starting to feel cold in the car, so we had to wait a long time before Q3 started. I had a good first run, but it was the last lap that really counted, on new tyres. I managed to produce a very good lap, and the car behaved very well. It’s an incredible period for the team after the double podium in Brazil, I hope we can stay at the front in the race.”

It's hard to know if the number 10 will be able to stay in front, but if there is a city where you have to try your luck, it's Las Vegas!
