Pirelli: the new tires are not confusing

Pirelli ensures that the implementation of the new hypertender rubber in F1 will not cause confusion for spectators. The F1 manufacturer will offer no less than seven slick tires for the 2018 season, taking care to change the color code with, for example, the hard rubber which will be represented by blue sidewalls which until now marked the rain tire.

If the identification of the new tires is a test of strength, Pirelli assures that the multiplication of ranges will not pose a problem in understanding the races and the strategies for the spectators.

“At the end of the season, with the new tires, a lot of people were saying that Pirelli was causing confusion, but that's not the goal, assured Mario Isola, the competition director of the Italian manufacturer, on ESPN. I'm sorry if that's the case, but I'm convinced that no one will talk about it after mid-season because everyone will know what we're doing. It's simply because it's new. »

Pirelli considered different solutions to simplify tire identification, but did not settle on the clearest idea.

“We could have used three colors and used them on each circuit, continued Mario Isola. We can take white, yellow and red and call them hard, medium and soft. But we would not have sent the right message to the public because they would have thought that we were using the same erasers everywhere when that is not the case. »
