Pirelli believes that the teams will adopt strategies similar to those carried out last year at the Spanish GP despite the improvements made to its tires. The supplier of the F1 therefore bet on a 2-stop test after having seen Lewis Hamilton triumph in 2014 with a medium-medium-hard combination.
If qualifying is essential on the Barcelona circuit, 8 of the last 10 winners having started from pole, an aggressive strategy can pay off. Sebastian Vettel managed to finish just off the podium last year after starting from 15th position in a 3-stop race.
“Thanks to the changes made this season to the structure of our envelopes, we are arriving in Barcelona with a product that will always save the front”, explains Paul Hembery, Pirelli sporting director. “That doesn’t mean there will be more stops. Last year the majority of drivers made two stops, and this will certainly be the case again this weekend. »
The performance gap between the medium and hard tires in Barcelona should be around a second.
