Pirelli has become cautious in its tire choices since the 2013 season where the manufacturer of the F1 had been heavily criticized due to delamination of its rubbers. The supplier of the discipline no longer takes risks and frequently opts for the hardest tires in its range, even if this means that the drivers only have to go through the pits once.
Paul Hembery explained that the Italian brand needed more testing. « We are not at the level we should have reached this year and it is true that we should have races with two or three stops, but we cannot do tests. We can sometimes be held accountable, but we must also be able to do our job”, replied the sporting director of Pirelli on Sky.
