For this new edition of the Italian Grand Prix, the Monza circuit has had a makeover. In the space of a year, the management of the Lombard track has undertaken a good number of projects ranging from public infrastructure, such as a new underground tunnel to improve spectator flows, to the track.
The latter has been completely resurfaced with bitumen that is now smoother and darker in colour. A factor that should not be overlooked since in the event of high heat – which is expected this weekend – the tar could exceed 50°C. With this new bitumen, the aim is to provide greater grip for F1, promoting the strong evolution of the track over the sessions.
The kerbs have also been revised and especially flattened. Those of the fast chicane of Ascari have practically no height which will allow the drivers to be even more aggressive. A novelty not really to everyone's taste regretting the "disappearance" of the classic side.
« I feel like she's lost some of her character., Alex pointed out. Albon at a press conference. That some of the kerbs they put in are a bit more ordinary. Monza had a quite specific track style. The track was quite bumpy, but that's not a bad thing. [however], and the vibrators are quite unique. Let's see how this goes (...) With new vibrators, the question is whether or not you can use them, and to what extent. »
An extended DRS
Among the other novelties, even if it does not concern the direction of the circuit itself, is the lengthening of one of the two DRS zones. The first is on the start/finish straight and the second between the second Lesmo and the Ascari chicane.
This is the first one that was targeted. In fact, the DRS activation zone was advanced by 103 meters. according to the test notes transmitted by the FIA ! Previously, this was triggered 115 meters after the finish line, now it will be only 12 meters after. A modification that will allow drivers to have a greater top speed on the straight line and above all more chance of succeeding in their overtaking(s) in the race. Show must go on!
