More fear than harm for Norris after his crash in FP2

Unlike many modern tracks where the runoff areas are as big as supermarket parking lots, Mugello is an unforgiving circuit. One wheel out and grass or gravel awaits you. With potentially a severe punishment at stake.

Lando Norris experienced it at the opening of the Tuscan GP this Friday. The British driver went wide at the Poggiosecco corner and found himself spinning before wiping his nose against a nearby wall, fortunately not serious for the occupant of the damaged MCL35.

« Even though I hate gravel, it's better to have it, Norris reported after his shortened work day. The challenge is greater, as is the satisfaction. There F1 should be like this. But it's not ideal for us.

The accident looked much worse from behind the wheel than from the outside. I think the steering is a little damaged, the rear as well but nothing too serious fortunately. I don't think I damaged the flat bottom or the ailerons, apart from the front wing of course.

The situation could have been worse so I was lucky. I made a small mistake and it paid off in cash. It cost me all my long stints in FP2. But that’s how it is, we’ll have to deal with it and try to make up for it tomorrow ».

After being very lively at Monza last week, the McLaren were more discreet at the start of the Tuscan weekend, with only the 13th and 14th times for Carlos Sainz and Norris in EL2.

The Briton admitted he expected to be higher on the grid, while the Woking team also tried a new nose on its MCL35, the introduction of which is planned for later this season if the part is satisfactory.
