On paper, the Sunday of Lando Norris is positive: starting sixth due to a disappointing qualification, he was able to come back during the race to finally settle on the last step of the podium, behind his teammate Oscar piastri and the pilot Mercedes George Russell. Despite his place on the podium, the Briton's race was mixed, marred by numerous and trivial errors that caused him to lose precious time and, surely, second place.
On the Sakhir circuit, the pace of the MCL39s was insane – as evidenced by the performance of Oscar Piastri, who, at the front, was never worried by the competition – and Lando Norris' comeback was to be expected. However, the championship leader should have done better but made things difficult for himself. It was a tough race and I made too many mistakes, immediately recognized the Englishman after the race. I'm disappointed not to get a double here at home, it would have been great."
Too many clumsy mistakes for Norris
Even before the lights went out, number 4 had misplaced his car on the starting grid and the race direction logically imposed a five-second penalty on him. Given that he crossed the checkered flag less than a second behind George Russell's Mercedes, the blunder was regrettable and was not the driver's only fault. McLaren this Sunday.
Later in the race, a too bold overtaking on the Ferrari de Lewis Hamilton costs him precious seconds again. I didn't know I had gone outside the track limits," explained Lando Norris. After his maneuver, his engineer quickly advised him to give the position back to the seven-time world champion to avoid another penalty, which he did, preventing him from concentrating on the drivers in front of him.
Finally, his final battle for second place on the podium with George Russell, in the last two laps of the race, was not masterfully led by the Glastonbury native. I had a lot of fun with some good overtaking. It was difficult but I'm staying positive, concludes Lando Norris. George did a good job, I thought I was going to be able to overtake him but he still had some pace in his tires. Congratulations to Oscar and the whole McLaren team. I'll try to raise my level for the next race."
Regarding the drivers' championship standings, Lando Norris remains the leader with 77 points, but his teammate is closing dangerously close and is now only 3 points behind the Briton. We'll see you next week in Jeddah to see if the Englishman will be able to make up for his poor Bahrain weekend.
