Funny birthday in Monza for AlphaTauri

A year after winning the Italian Grand Prix, AlphaTauri lost its two cars very quickly last Sunday. A brake problem prevented Yuki Tsunoda from starting, while damaged suspension forced Pierre Gasly to retire on lap 5.

Clearly, the 2021 edition was nothing like that of the previous year for Alpha Tauri. Surprise winner in 2020 thanks to the opportunism of Pierre Gasly, the Italian structure experienced a weekend that was the polar opposite of what it experienced twelve months ago. “Unfortunately, the race ended before it started for both of our drivers.” Jody Egginton, technical director of AlphaTauri, can only see the damage. For the first time since the start of the season, the Italian team did not score a single point during the Italian Grand Prix. Yuki tsunoda threw in the towel even before the start of the Grand Prix due to a brake problem, while his teammate Pierre Gasly, who left the pit lane after his crash during the sprint race, retired during the 5th lap at due to a suspension problem.

A scenario that leaves a bitter taste in the ranks of AlphaTauri. “The most frustrating thing is that we weren't able to build on Friday's strong performance from Pierre. Likewise, Yuki was not able to accumulate such important mileage and experience in racing.” Jody Egginton also regrets not having “been able to take the fight to our closest competitors.”

Rebound expected from the Sochi Grand Prix

To avoid being left behind by Alpine in the manufacturer rankings, AlphaTauri will have to show a completely different face during the next Sochi Grand Prix, on September 26. If Pierre Gasly is aware that “the performance of the car is there”, the French driver knows that the team will have to “work hard to prepare for the next race”. Same story with Yuki Tsunoda who wishes “turn the page and focus entirely on Russia”. As a reminder, the Italian team is eleven units behind on Alpine in the constructors' championship.
