Mercedes is “a great opportunity” for Mick judge Ralf Schumacher

Not preserved by Haas nor by the Ferrari Driver Academy, Mick Schumacher found refuge with Mercedes in a role of third driver behind the holders Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. The 23-year-old young man thus joins a team in which his father Michael played from 2010 to 2012.

« I think it's a win-win situation for both parties. » judges his uncle Ralf Schumacher on Sky Sports Germany.

« Firstly for the team, they have an excellent driver if they need a short-term replacement in case one of the two starters cannot get behind the wheel, develops Mick Schumacher’s uncle. Then, he is now in a team where he can learn a lot through a big structure. »

Mercedes before Audi?

The driver at the 180 Grands Prix in Formula 1 took the opportunity to slip a tackle to the now former team of his nephew, Haas. “(Mercedes) is a great opportunity, insists Ralf Schumacher. He is now in an experienced stable with two teammates who are also experienced. Above all, for a change, he is in a team which is happy that he is there. »

Still according to Ralf Schumacher, the role of third driver at Mercedes could allow Mick to prepare for a return to the grid in the years to come. With Audi?

« It has the opportunity to develop further, Ralf continued. I can imagine that Audi might be interested in the future because there aren't really any German drivers on the market, but that's still a long way off (2026). In the meantime, he's in good hands where he is now. At 24 (he will have them next March. Editor’s note), I am convinced that he will have a chance to start again, no matter where. »
