Even before the decision of the college of commissioners to penalize Max Verstappen of three grid places – taking the Dutchman from pole to 4th place -, Sebastian Vettel et Lewis Hamilton had expressed themselves in more or less explicit terms on the need to sanction the pilot Red Bull.
« It was clear that there were double yellow flags, had confided the German. I saw Valtteri (Bottas) in the slides and the marshals jump on the track to help him. It was obvious that we had to lift. »
Same analysis from Lewis Hamilton, except that the five-time world champion did not hesitate to call on the FIA to be extremely firm.
« Valtteri was in front of me, he explained shortly after the incident. There were no flags when I came into the corner, but I knew something was happening. While wondering whether I should relieve myself or not, I saw that there was an accident and I took my foot off the gas.
The FIA must be very strict with this. Valterri could have been in the middle of the track and marshals could have been there too. He ignored the double yellow, and that’s not great! The drivers know that the flags must be respected. Plus, he said he saw them and didn't get up. He didn't have to do that because he had pole anyway. »
