Why is McLaren struggling to achieve dominance in qualifying?

Antonelli on pole in the Sprint, Verstappen on pole in the Grand Prix: in Miami, McLaren failed to secure either of the two pole positions up for grabs. Is the MCL39 really the best car on the grid in the flying lap exercise?

The statistic is enough to make you smile, or surprise you. After qualifying for the Miami Grand Prix, Max Verstappen now has three pole positions in its pocket since the start of the 2025 season, as many as Lando Norris et Oscar piastri…reunited. In other words, Red Bull currently has as many pole positions as McLaren over the first six rounds of the season. If we add to that the Sprint Qualifying, then the British team has only secured three poles in eight attempts, a conversion rate of "only" 37,5%. Immediately, the ultra-dominance attributed to the Woking team this year seems much less impressive
