It was the day of firsts on Saturday, during qualifying for the British Grand Prix. If Carlos Sainz scored the first pole of his career at Silverstone, Nicholas latifi also achieved an unprecedented performance by reaching Q3. With a Williams “old-spec”, without the developments made only on the carAlexander albon, the Canadian played through the rain to cross the threshold of Q2 for the very first time in 49 Grands Prix.

Qualified 10th at the end of Q3, the Williams driver, who celebrated his 27th birthday on June 29, did not hide his happiness at the end of the day. “It’s obviously a very positive qualifying session. Just getting to Q2 was already great, Q3 is definitely more than we could have hoped for! » exclaimed Latifi in the mixed zone. “When it rains, you obviously hope there are opportunities. I'm happy with this result and I think what was really key was being in the right place at the right time. The team did a great job with that, with the positioning on the track. »

“My car is not the 10th fastest car” admits Latifi

With this 10th place on the grid, Nicholas Latifi beat Alexander Albon for the first time this regular season. The Thai, who nevertheless benefits from the massive developments on the FW44, was only able to achieve the 16th time in Q1.

Despite this excellent result in qualifying, the Canadian was slightly disappointed not to have been able to defend his chances in Q3. “It was very positive and naturally there was a bit of frustration with the off track I had in Q3... but I'm so far from our usual position, I think it was tricky to be more higher than that. And I must have had some damage after that, the car was really unstable. »

For the race on Sunday afternoon (16 p.m.), scheduled on a dry track, the Williams driver remains realistic about his chances of points at Silverstone. “My car is not the 10th fastest car on the grid, Latifi admitted. Tomorrow (Sunday), for the race, it is very likely that it will be dry. We're going to have a lot of faster cars coming up behind. We have to see what we can do, we have to concentrate on our race. »
