Prost: Renault wants top drivers in 2019

Renault Sport F1 Team is in the middle of a strategic maneuver and is working towards the development of its team over the coming years. After confirming Carlos Sainz Jr next year alongside Nico Hulkenberg in addition to its partnership with Renault, the Losange is following its objective by aiming for a better place in the hierarchy in order to attract the most experienced drivers in the field.

“The driver market is important and we are in a position for the end of 2018 where things will be more open for discussion, has explained Alain Prost on Sky Sports. At the end of 2018 there will be many drivers without contracts. We want to become a better team, we will prove it next year and we want to be at the center of the market. »

Fernando Alonso could in particular be an option, the Asturian expected to extend with McLaren in 2018 having won his two titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006. The Losange still took a risk by choosing to strengthen the Woking team which could be a direct opponent next year.

“It was very difficult to accept the engine contracts, with Renault on one side and Honda with the two teams Red Bull », added Alain Prost, which reinforces the possibility of a separation between Red Bull and Renault at the end of the next season for the benefit of the Japanese engine manufacturer.
