Prost: “We’ve hit rock bottom”

The redemption of shares of Renault by Genii Capital in the stable ofenstone, as well as the investment of Group Lotus, resulted in the birth of Lotus Renault GP this Wednesday. If the team has thus assured its future, the news has come to sound the death knell for the F1 French. From now on, Renault is only an engine manufacturer and technical partner of the Lotus Renault GP team.

Alain Prost, who never lacks frankness, recognizes that the situation is becoming complicated: no more French drivers, no more French Grand Prix, no more French teams. ?It?s a realistic point of view. There is of course an element of defeatism but these are the facts. We hit rock bottom. But in certain cases, it can be quite bad,” he explains for AUTOhebdo.fr

Indeed, through this observation of failure, the four-time World Champion believes that France can become aware of the situation. “We can be realistic but also optimistic. People realize that this is not a good thing for an automobile country like France. There will therefore perhaps be measures and strategies implemented to remedy this and return to a normal situation, perhaps in a more solid manner than in the past. »

However, Alain Prost explains to us that the period is not favorable for a return of F1 to France. “It’s extremely difficult at the moment because we are a somewhat autophobic country. Companies and brands no longer want to invest in Formula 1.”

The Dacia driver in Andros Trophy also thinks that the sports sector has its share of responsibility in this phenomenon. “The fact that there is no French Grand Prix is one thing. But the fact that there is no competitive French driver is a big lack. This is what brings audiences and people's interest in this sport. »

According to Alain Prost, this absence of “French-style F1” did not happen overnight. “For me, it's not a surprise, and I'm not sure that the people who were aware of what was happening didn't sense it happening. It was not inevitable. Today, we have to do things differently. »
