Who says Saturday in Formula 1, called qualifying: the most exhilarating exercise there is, where the drivers push their machines to their limits in an attempt to extract the last thousandths capable of propelling them to the front of the starting grid. In this demonstration of pure driving, some are more comfortable than others, but since the start of the season, no one has managed to clearly establish themselves as the king of qualifying. Lando Norris took his first pole position of the year in Melbourne, before losing to his teammate Oscar piastri in China. Between the two, the first Sprint weekend of the year was crowned Lewis Hamilton, poleman then winner for his second meeting with Ferrari.

At Suzuka, the drivers will therefore do battle for the fourth time this year, with the aim of beating the McLaren, very fast since the start of the weekend. But to imagine the Woking single-seaters already locking down the front row would be very presumptuous, when some of the best in the world over one lap can also claim pole position.
Max Verstappen (8), George Russell (4) and Charles Leclerc (3) have between them secured fifteen of the twenty-four pole positions in 2024. The three men have the ability to repeat the feat in one lap, despite cars that are (slightly) less good than the McLaren. To watch the battle of the leaders around the superb Suzuka circuit, you will have to turn on the TV at 8 a.m. French time, or follow the session live with commentary on our site.
