What should Hamilton hope to be champion in Türkiye?

As the drivers contest the first of the final four races of the 2020 season, Lewis Hamilton is on the verge of becoming world champion for the seventh time in his career. This Sunday, he can leave Istanbul Park crowned with a new world crown. To do this, he must be at least 78 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas at the end of the Turkish Grand Prix.

And for this event to take place this Sunday, no less than 13 scenarios exist. Here they are :

  • If Bottas wins, Hamilton must finish 2nd
  • If Bottas finishes 2nd and sets the fastest lap, Hamilton must be 4th at worst
  • If Bottas finishes 2nd, Hamilton must finish the GP 4th or 5th but with the best time in the race
  • If Bottas finishes 3rd with the best time, Hamilton must be at least 5th at the finish
  • If Bottas finishes 3rd, Hamilton must finish 6th or better
  • If Bottas finishes 4th with the fastest lap in the race, Hamilton must be 7th or higher in the final standings
  • If Bottas finishes 4th, Hamilton can finish the GP 8th with the best time in the race or simply be 7th
  • If Bottas finishes 5th with fastest lap, Hamilton must be at least 8th
  • If Bottas finishes 5th, Hamilton must be 9th by setting the best time or simply be 8th
  • If Bottas finishes 6th and with the best time in the race, Hamilton must be 9th at worst at the finish
  • If Bottas finishes 6th, Hamilton must finish 10th or better
  • If Bottas finishes 7th or higher, Hamilton is automatically world champion

This Sunday, Lewis Hamilton is 6th on the starting grid while Valtteri Bottas is only 9th. If these positions are the same at the end of the Grand Prix, the Englishman will become world champion for the 7th time, thus equaling the record holder Michael Schumacher.
