The manufacturer of the Formula 1, Pirelli, has revealed the different possible strategies for the Abu Dhabi GP. According to the Italian supplier, the teams are expected to opt for a one-stop strategy at Yas Marina, using only the hardest tyres on offer. The soft tyres are not expected to be used on Sunday, barring any unforeseen circumstances or a last-minute Safety Car.
According to Pirelli, the drivers have three strategic options: the first with a start on Medium tires, with a stop around lap 23 to put on Hard tires and finish the race. The second would be the exact opposite with a start on Hard tires, a first stint extended until around lap 36 and a switch to Medium tires to finish the Abu Dhabi GP. Finally, the third is more daring and will depend on wear and tear and the facts of the race: a two-stop strategy made for the attack, with a start on Medium tires, a first premature pit stop around lap 15, then two stints on Hard tires with a second stop around lap 36.
In terms of the remaining sets of tires for the Abu Dhabi GP, all drivers – with the exception of Fernando Alonso – still have at least one set of unused Hard tires. Mercedes and Aston Martin are also the only teams not to have a new set of Medium tires available. Red Bull, Ferrari et McLaren all have the same remaining allocation, namely two new sets of Hard tires, one new set of Medium tires and three broken-in sets of Soft tires.
As a reminder, Pirelli brought the softest tires in its range to Abu Dhabi on the Yas Marina track: the C3 (hard), the C4 (medium) and the C5 (soft).
