Racing Point wants to realize its great potential in racing

The Silverstone team focused its preparation work with the aim of transforming its good starting positions into convincing results.

Before causing quite a stir in the paddock with his Racing Point RP20 greatly inspired by the Mercedes last year, the former Force India structure was renowned for its ability to score big points despite modest resources. Faculty embodied wonderfully by Sergio Pérez, honest in qualifying but above all devilishly efficient in the race and podium scorer in front of the eternal.

Now that Racing Point is fighting in the big leagues and qualifying at the forefront, it's as if the pink team had lost its flair on Sunday afternoon.

In Barcelona, Sergio Pérez and Lance stroll confirmed the potential of the controversial RP20 by rising to 4th and 5th places respectively. Their boss Otmar Szafnauer now hopes that his drivers will transform the test during the Grand Prix, even if it means experiencing an event without much of a twist.

« We are here for the fans so I hope the race will be interesting and entertaining but if by boring you mean we would finish 4th and 5th, then yes I would welcome such a scenario, confided the American.

In the past, we used to finish higher ranked than our starting positions, but we have not managed to maintain this trend in the last races. We spent a lot of time this weekend to make sure we have a competitive car in the race.

In previous weekends we struggled a bit with tire management in high heat. We expected to find similar conditions in Spain so we carried out our race simulations accordingly and modified our settings so that the car could coax its tires.

If we want to succeed in finishing higher than our place on the grid, that means we have to challenge Max Verstappen and Red Bull. I don't know if it's possible but we'll do our best ».

Szafnauer specifies that he was not surprised by the performance of Pérez, back in action after 2 weeks of forced isolation following several positive screenings for Covid-19.

« Checo still felt generally well during the period he had the virus, added the Racing Point CEO. I think he just had a headache one day. He didn't understand why he couldn't ride last weekend.

He trained almost normally in his apartment during his quarantine. I wouldn't go so far as to say he was asymptomatic but it wasn't far off. And then the drivers shoot in Barcelona so often that they know it like the back of their hand ».
