Comme on pouvait le redouter depuis plusieurs semaines déjà, le diffuseur des écuries Toyota, Williams and Brawn were at the heart of controversy in the Melbourne paddock.

At 17:35 p.m. for Williams, at 19:10 p.m. for Toyota and at 19:15 p.m. for Brawn GP, a joint complaint from Renault, Red Bull Racing et Ferrari was officially filed questioning the legality of the broadcaster of the three targeted teams.

BMW-Sauber was ultimately not taken into account in the list of complainants, since the representatives of the team presented themselves too late to the FIA stewards' office.

Mario Theissen, Technical Director of the team and President of BMW-Motorsport, was however very clear about his opinion and his desire to clarify things.

“In our opinion, there is a difference in interpretation of the regulation which must be clarified as quickly as possible. Between the two diffusers, the gain is substantial, as confirmed by the measurements we carried out. »

If the interpretation of the teams in the hot seat were to be ratified by the technical commissioners, the other teams would have no other solution than to develop a new diffuser before Malaysia. A rapid adoption deemed impossible by Mario Theissen, since the impact on the work of the rear tires would then be too significant?

In any case, the Toyota, Williams and Brawn GP teams will participate in the Australian Grand Prix and it will be up to the FIA Court of Appeal to validate their classification or, on the contrary, to downgrade them for use of 'an element that does not comply with the regulations.
