Red Bull files complaint against Mercedes over DDA

The sacred union displayed by the stables of Formula 1 during the forced truce will have been shattered after two small free practice sessions. Following on from EL2, Red Bull has in fact filed a formal complaint against the Mercedes W11 to the stewards of the Austrian Grand Prix, 1st round of the season (July 3-5).

In the sights of the Red Bull: the dual-axis steering installed on the W11 and which allows the driver to adjust the toe of the front wheels by pulling on the steering wheel while the car is moving. Red Bull believes that the single-seaters of Lewis Hamilton et Valtteri Bottas are not in compliance with the technical regulations, more specifically articles 3.8 and 10.2.3.

The first stipulates that with rare exceptions, specified in other articles, “ any element of the car which has an influence on its aerodynamic performance must remain stationary in connection with the suspended part of the car ". The second article mentioned specifies that “ the suspension system cannot be adjusted while the vehicle is in motion ».

Red Bull filed two complaints, one for each Mercedes, and specifically targeted the Free Practice 2 session where the DDA was used. Representatives of the German and Austrian teams are summoned before the Spielberg stewards at 19:10 p.m.

Earlier today, Christian Horner and Toto wolff had mentioned this famous DDA. The Red Bull team principal said they wanted clarification on the legality of the device. His Austrian counterpart said he was convinced of having the necessary arguments to defend this technical discovery after having spoken at length with the FIA technical department.

Wolff had made it clear that he trusted Horner to act with discernment and prevent the resumption of F1 from being decided on green ground. Obviously, we're not really in this state of mind on the Austrian side...
