Mercedes F1 asked the FIA to provide clarification on the regulatory use of wind tunnels. The reigning world champion manufacturer is questioning in particular the testing of aerodynamic elements and the sharing of information and data.
It was technical director Paddy Lowe who made the request to Charlie Whiting, the FIA technical director, on October 15.
Scuderia Ferrari would be indirectly targeted by this request. Mercedes would be concerned about the possible use of the wind tunnel Haas F1 Team by the Italian team which formed a partnership with the American structure which it will power in 2016. The FIA inspected the wind tunnel Maranello this season without finding anything unusual.
Charlie Whiting responded to Mercedes on November 13, stating that it was impossible for him to answer these questions as these subjects did not concern his area of expertise. The commissioners will have to provide solutions.
