Renault will field an RS20 chassis packed with developments in Austria

The RS20 which will take to the track in a week for the first free tests of the Austrian Grand Prix (July 3-5) will be very different from the one which was due to run in Australia in mid-March.

Renault had started the 2020 campaign with the intention of making chassis developments at the 3rd race, then at the 5th and 6th meetings. The objective was then to follow an aggressive program of new products before switching as soon as possible to the 2021 project, which represents the priority objective of the Losange.

The one-year postponement of the future technical revolution did not change the 2020 progress table of the Jaunes-et-Noirs. Cyril Abiteboul confirmed this during an online press conference this Friday.

« We have made important and difficult decisions to ensure the implementation of our development plan, confided the main Renault team. We will stick to it. Other choices will follow. We will have the opportunity to discuss them later.

On the chassis side, developments are coming. There has been a huge in-house production effort to bring the developments originally planned for Hanoi, Zandvoort, and Barcelona. These races obviously did not take place but the performance that the new products are supposed to bring will be good for Spielberg ».

The French manager, however, wanted to calm the enthusiasm by recalling the setbacks of last season, concluded by Renault in 5th place in the Manufacturers' ranking, quite far from its engine customer team. McLaren

« I want to qualify expectations, specified Abiteboul. We know our car was very bad last year. We hope that the car this season will be better. We're not 100% sure of his level of competitiveness after winter testing so I don't want to say too much before Austria. The sensations are good but let's wait and see.

This does not detract from the feeling of satisfaction that reigns after the numerous efforts made to ensure that these parts are not only available, but available in sufficient quantity because we know that the Red Bull Ring can be demanding, even brittle for cars, even if certain vibrators have been removed ».

Only one more week to wait before the first answers come in.
