Renault confirms engine developments for Montreal

With the reduction in engine allocation for 2018 (3 MGU-H and 3 turbochargers but above all 2 MGU-K, 2 batteries, and 2 electronic controls instead of 4 thrusters in their entirety), the manufacturers have divided the season into three and planned new developments around Montreal and then Singapore, barring unforeseen reliability issues.

Si Renault experienced some problems in this area with its client team Red Bull (turbo broken in China for Daniel Ricciardo), the Losange has so far made a perfect copy with its factory stable.

« We will introduce a new engine benefiting from developments during the seventh race in Canada, Taffin said. I hope the expected gains will be there and we can't wait to see it in action ».

There is no doubt that Red Bull will monitor these announced improvements very closely, especially as they must coincide with similar developments on the Honda side. The Austrian team, whose engine contract with Renault expires at the end of 2018, has not yet decided whether to continue with its historic partner or join its junior team Toro Rosso in the fold of the Japanese manufacturer.

Before the developments in Montreal, Renault will have to negotiate the Monaco meeting, a race where the raw power of the powertrain plays a lesser role but which still offers several challenges on the engine level.

« The most important thing for a driver here is to have confidence in the behavior of the engine, adds Taffin. Of course we want to build on our performances, but consistency and predictability are crucial on such a special circuit. We need to focus on how the power is delivered due to slow cornering at low revs. We'll keep an eye on it, but we're ready ».

After seeing delighted 4th place in the Manufacturers ranking at McLaren in Spain, Renault is now aiming for a double points finish in all races, says its general manager Cyril Abiteboul.
