Renault and Kubica invite themselves to the party

Renault, at the end of the first four Grands Prix of the season, clearly appeared in fifth place among the teams of Formula 1. But the team from the Losange firm could take advantage of the return to Europe to distinguish itself further. In Barcelona, Rosbert Kubica finished seventh in qualifying, ahead of the Mercedes by Nico Rosberg and the Ferrari by Felipe Massa.

« Overall, the qualifications were good, says the Pole. I think I got the best out of the car and 7th place is a solid result. We didn't bring a big package of new technical features to this race, so it's encouraging to finish ahead of a Ferrari and a Mercedes. »

If Renault has based its strategy on aggressive development, the return to European Grands Prix should allow all the teams to develop their cars. In this context, Robert Kubica is all the more surprised by his performance. The Pole now hopes to be able to compete in the race.

« I did not expect this. I know tomorrow's race will be difficult and it will be interesting to see how the soft tires hold up with full fuel in the first few laps. I think our race pace will be comparable to that of qualifying. So I hope to have a solid race and score good points. »

For his part, Eric Boullier, team principal, is delighted with such a result. “ Robert did an excellent job today qualifying in seventh position. If someone had told us before this weekend that we were going to finish ahead of a Ferrari and a Mercedes on the grid, we would have been very happy »
