Renault praises Carlos Sainz's team spirit

With 46 points on the clock on the evening of the Monaco Grand Prix, Renault Sport F1 Team took advantage of the zero points of McLaren in the Principality to widen the gap a little on the Woking structure in the Manufacturers' championship.

The result, among other things, of a great understanding within the French team, when Carlos Sainz let his teammate pass Nico Hulkenberg, started on a different strategy, and in struggle with the Red Bull RB14 Max Verstappen.

A gesture appreciated by the Losange management. “Carlos did his best with the strategy, but he was faced with more degradation of the ultra-soft tires than expected, analysis Cyril Abiteboul, boss of Renault Sport Racing. We have to thank him for playing the team game to get today's result. »

However, this double top 10 still has room for improvement for the French manager, with work to be done in particular on the use of the Pirelli tires, which caused a lot of problems during the race for the entire peloton. And perhaps adopt a different strategy, particularly in qualifying.

“Even though we obtained a much better result than last year in Monaco, we were not as competitive as in the last races,” continues Abiteboul. We need to work even more on tire management and understanding.

In this situation, it was almost better to start eleventh and have the free choice of tires, rather than being in the top ten with the obligation to use qualifying tires. Some teams ahead of us are able to make this work, so it's possible. »
