Renault will not contest

If this announcement has the effect of a bomb, it is because for the first time, Renault speaks out on the allegations made by the Piquet family concerning the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, even specifying that it will not contest them, which amounts to admitting that the statements of Nelson Piquet Junior would be accurate. In this specific case, the departure of the two protagonists of the affair was inevitable.

The Renault team therefore orchestrated Nelson Piquet's accident during the 2008 Singapore GP, disregarding the spirit of sport and the safety of the marshals and other drivers. By choosing to part ways with its managers, Renault intends to shed light on a matter which could cost it very dearly. Max Mosley, the president of the FIA, indicated on the sidelines of the Italian GP that if the facts turned out to be correct, it would correspond to "more" than cheating, an act for which McLaren was fined 100 million euros in 2007.

« If you're a cyclist and you do drugs, that's cheating. If you bribe someone or someone in the peloton falls in a way that results in the yellow jersey, that's more serious. But if it endangers human lives, whether those of spectators, marshals or drivers, then it is even more serious. He had said.

The Renault team therefore risks a big sanction which could go as far as disqualification forever. This is in fact what the code provides for at its worst. By deciding to cooperate and separate from the two masterminds of the affair, Renault could however receive a lesser sanction even if this should be exemplary.
