Renault gradually withdraws from F1 but he wishes to maintain his status as an engine manufacturer. The French manufacturer currently powers three teams: Lotus-Renault, Red Bull and Team Lotus.
Le Losange wants to take a new step by attempting to power a 4th team from next season in order to prepare for the 2013 season with the new regulations on engines (1,6 liter turbo). “ The goal is to have more teams next year », Commented Jean-François Caubet, director of Renault Sport in F1, on Autosport.
« We want to motorize 4 teams but we must have the approval of the FIA because the limitation is only three teams », continues Jean-François Caubet. “ We are preparing for 2013 and the problem is that if we don't take care of it now, it will be too late. »
Williams could be the team targeted by the French manufacturer. The Grove team currently has a contract with Cosworth until 2012. But Jean-François Caubet added that other teams were also in the Losange's crosshairs.
