Staying in F1, Pérez’s “priority objective”

As Sebastian Vettel, his successor at Racing Point/Aston Martin, Sergio Pérez was therefore dumped by phone.

Less than 24 hours before the announcement of the transfer of the future ex-pilot Ferrari, the Mexican received a phone call from Lawrence Stroll, owner of Racing Point and boss of Aston Martin, warning him that his services were no longer required.

« He told me that the team had chosen to go in another direction », breathed this Thursday Pérez from Mugello where the F1 is making a stopover for the first time in its history for the Tuscan Grand Prix.

The thirty-year-old from Guadalajara admitted to being surprised by his ouster, he who had a contract until 2022 and thought he had obtained guarantees from the Silverstone team in recent weeks.

A fine connoisseur of this « completely crazy universe that is F1 »However, Pérez clarified that he was not disappointed because he knew that Racing Point was negotiating with other parties behind the scenes. It must be said that the Vettel rumor was not new.

The former Sauber driver and McLaren would nevertheless have appreciated being informed earlier in order to be able to turn around. “ I don't have a plan B “, he wrote in his farewell letter published on social networks Wednesday evening.

« All options are on the table, he said this Thursday. My main objective is to stay in F1. I still feel young and hungry and want to continue the adventure. But it has to be a competitive car. A package capable of giving me maximum motivation.

It must also be a long-term project because a regulatory upheaval is on the horizon in 2022. This is the main reason which pushes me to want to continue until then. I'm going to take my time and don't expect to make a definitive decision in the near future.

If nothing attractive presents itself in F1, I would look at the other championships ».

We can imagine that the talent, experience, and support of the Mexican make him an attractive candidate for teams like Alfa Romeo et Haas
