The unpredictable weather in the Osaka region in recent weeks has led to several closures at Kansai International Airport, where freight from the teams to Suzuka usually passes. The products were thus diverted to Tokyo where they were delayed at customs.
The BP/Castrol lubricants could not be delivered until early Friday morning, which forced Renault et McLaren to enter the circuit before 7 a.m., a time which marked the end of the FIA curfew.
For Renault, this is the first infraction of two allowed in a season, while McLaren was left with an exhausted 2018 joker quota. The two teams decided to appeal, explaining that it was a case of force majeure beyond their control. They won their case with the race stewards a few hours later.
Red Bull, the third team powered by Renault, did not experience such a mishap because the structure of Milton Keynes uses another gasoline and lubricant supplier, ExxonMobil.
