Ricciardo: “Not convinced of being on pole after the first sector”

His cry of joy in the radio says it all. Once again in pole position after his Monaco performance, Daniel Ricciardo took a breath of fresh air after being abandoned in the United States last weekend.

The Australian of Red Bull Racing snatched pole in the final moments of qualifying in Mexico, ahead of his teammate Max Verstappen, yet the most lively since the start of the debates at the Hermanos Rodriguez Autodrome in Mexico City.

“I knew establishing the turn would be crucial, as always, says Ricciardo after leaving his seat. Max showed that the pace was there in the car all weekend. I just knew I had to have a clean lap at the end. Well done to the team, it’s a double. It's pretty cool. »

Ricciardo, however, did not appear so confident during his last flying lap. “I knew the rhythm was there, comments the latter at a press conference. The first sector wasn't as good as expected and I was a little surprised after that. But the second and third were very good and that's where I made the difference.

I wasn't convinced after the first sector that I could be on pole. The previous round wasn't particularly perfect. »
