Robert Kubica remains optimistic

Robert Kubica, who qualified seventh on Saturday, finished eighth in Barcelona on Sunday. On paper, a decent result, but the Pole regrets not having been more incisive in the first minutes of the race, which conditioned the rest. “ My first lap was not very good, and this compromised my race because I lost several places », Says the former BMW driver.

Although he was fighting in the top 10, the Pole was not free from problems and did not have the opportunity to return to his stand when necessary. “ Actually, I had a good start and I was fighting against Felipe [Massa] in the first corner, continues Kubica. Unfortunately, I lost grip on the exit when I accelerated and ended up sideways. Then, in the third corner, I hit Kamui Kobayashi, which didn't leave me much room, and it damaged my front wing and cost me a few places. From that moment on I suffered from very pronounced understeer, the race became very difficult but the peloton was so tight that we couldn't afford to stop to repair. »

However, Robert Kubica finished in the top 8 again, scoring important points and showing a pace close to that of the best. “ I was able to fight behind Sutil and I felt that the car was competitive but we know well how difficult it is to overtake on this circuit. Otherwise, our race pace was good this weekend and it was a pleasant surprise for us. We are now looking forward to being in Monaco next weekend. »

Despite everything, Robert Kubica knows that Renault still has progress to make to compete with the teams at the top of the table. “ We hope to climb the ladder, affirms the Renault driver to Europe 1, maybe within two or three races. But the positions going from 6th to 8th are currently our place. »
