Rome in F1 by 2012

Grands Prix on urban tracks seem to have the wind in their sails. After Monaco, Valencia and Singapore, Rome could become the next city to open its streets to Formula 1. This weekend, promoter Maurizio Flammini announced that an agreement had been reached with FOM (Formula One Management) for the holding of an F1 Grand Prix in Rome. “The agreement with Bernie Ecclestone to revive the project of a Ghent Prix in Rome has been reached and signed,” declared the former driver.

If an Italian Grand Prix is already organized in Monza, the mayor of Rome was keen to affirm that the Roman GP would not replace that of Monza. “ We think the Rome Grand Prix will be very important for us and we are in favor of it, attests Gianni Alemanno to Sky Italia. It?s not true that it will be an alternative to Monza. Monza is a circuit Grand Prix and that of Rome will be a complement, not a replacement. »

If Rome does not replace Monza for the Italian Grand Prix, then we could imagine another name, such as the Mediterranean Grand Prix, so that it can exist, unless the European Grand Prix takes up residence in the Italian capital. As for the date, it is not yet known but the organizers hope to be able to organize this Grand Prix in 2012, while Bernie Ecclestone is leaning towards 2013.
