Ross Brawn: “We could do 17 or 18 races”

The global coronavirus pandemic has forced F1 to take draconian measures by postponing the Grands Prix of Bahrain, Vietnam, China and possibly the Netherlands and Spain just after the late cancellation of the Australian GP.

If the F1 calendar remains busy, the championship organizers believe they have a good chance of being able to compete in the events, taking advantage of the summer break between the Hungarian GP (August 2) and the Belgian GP (August 30).

“We are taking a break and for once we will not have any races at the start of the year, but we will try to postpone them later in the season, confirmed Ross Brawn, Motor Sports Director of Liberty Media, on Sky Sports. We will have several weeks during the August break where we could place a race. We can then build a fairly extensive calendar for the rest of the year in order to preserve a good number of events. »

F1 even seems ready to modify the course of the Grands Prix with two days of running if the races have to be linked together.

“I am quite optimistic that we can compete in 17 or 18 races, or even more, added Ross Brawn. It will depend on when the season starts. We talked about having two-day weekends in the event of 3 consecutive Grands Prix. That could be an option. »

F1 has indicated that it is considering launching the season at the end of May, possibly at the Monaco GP or the Azerbaijan GP (June 7) in Baku. These options will depend on the evolution of the Covid-19 epidemic.
