Ross Brawn puts reverse grids back on the table

Ross Brawn is not losing his bearings. The Motor Sport director of the Formula 1 took advantage of a completely crazy grand prix at Monza to talk again about the hot topic of reverse grids in F1.

They were normally to be tested from this year on, during two or three meetings. But vehement outings of Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and other Charles Leclerc against the idea had calmed things down. The health crisis made them fall into oblivion.

Ross Brown has not forgotten. “Monza was a candidate for a reverse grid sprint race when we considered testing them this year. Unfortunately, we were unable to go further but we still intend to look into the concept in the coming months and discuss with the teams for next year. »

The F1 Motor Sport director does not budge, they are one of the solutions to make the Grand Prix weekend more spectacular. “On Sunday, the race showed the excitement that a mixed peloton can generate. As next year's cars will be the same as in 2020, our fans could be offered a spectacle similar to the one we saw on Sunday with the reversed grids. »

Ross Brawn recognizes that we could not attend the same race. “ Of course, teams would tune their cars differently. Today, Mercedes prepares his cars to get the fastest lap in the race and then control the race from the front. If they knew that the drivers were going to overtake, they would be forced to change their approach. We will continue to evaluate new formats with the aim of improving the show, while keeping the DNA of F1. »

The debate remains open on the interest of inverted grids.
