Ross Brawn: Nothing stops us from having electric F1 cars in the future.

After its launch in 2014, the Formula E will pass an important milestone for the fifth season, contested over the two years 2018-2019, with the arrival of the second generation of single-seaters, making it possible in particular to no longer change vehicles. car mid-course, due to the adoption of new batteries developed by McLaren.

Strengthened by its technological progress, the discipline displays a real capacity to attract, as evidenced by the arrivals of major manufacturers, particularly Germans.

And if "electricity" technology does not only meet with supporters, it is impossible not to see it as a new axis of development in motorsport, the e-WRX and the first drafts of electric TCR cars coming to be part of this movement .

However, according to Ross Brawn, director of Motor Sports at Liberty Media, electric vehicles are still too far removed from the environment. F1. “With all respect, this is a very young category, believes the Briton on F1 Fan Voice, an initiative launched by F1.

It's a big event in terms of everything that happens around it, but the race itself is pretty bland compared to a Formula 1 Grand Prix. The cars aren't particularly fast. They don’t have the personalities involved. This is a smaller junior formula.

But they do a fabulous job with the event, making it a street party. But Formula 1 is different. Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport. The speeds reached, the caliber of drivers and teams we have. »

No closed doors

Ross Brawn, on the other hand, indicates that technology should not be ruled out from the future of F1. “I don’t necessarily see Formula 1 locked into internal combustion engines forever.

Who knows where we will be in 10 years? 10 years ago, I don't think many people could have predicted the face of the world so I don't know where we will be in 10 years. But Formula 1 will evolve in the right direction.

I believe Formula 1 will evolve in the direction that has the right balance between sport, relevance and engagement with fans. If in five years or ten years, or as soon as there is a need, a desire, to have another type of engine in Formula 1, we will do it.

Nothing is stopping us from having electric Formula 1 cars in the future. At the moment, this does not offer the [desired] spectacle. »
