Russell sets new lap record in Hungary

The private tests held on the Hungaroring circuit (Hungary) allowed the young guard to distinguish themselves. The day after the best time posted by Antonio Giovinazzi on his Ferrari, it is the turn of George Russell to become the unofficial lap record holder on the route designed near Budapest, six tenths faster than Sebastian Vettel in free practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The GP3 Series champion in 2017 wore super soft tires (pink sidewalls) just like his Italian sidekick twenty-four hours earlier. His turn in 1'15''575 is faster than Antonio Giovinazzi’s by less than a tenth. Despite the best time and no less than 103 laps completed, the Briton was slowed down during the day by a gearbox problem.

Behind him we find Kimi Räikkönen (Ferrari) to only 74 thousandths. The gap is greater with the Blancpain GT Series driver Jake Dennis, guest on a Red Bull through his pilot contract Aston Martin in GT3 (3rd at 1”437).

The star of this day was Robert Kubica (Williams). The Pole was encouraged by his usual cohort of supporters, who were also able to see a car multi-colored. These paintings covered the former pilot’s mount Renault en F1 to determine the flow of air over the bodywork.

The only Frenchman engaged this Wednesday, Pierre Gasly (Toro Rosso) finished these tests in 10th place with a best time of 1’19”790. However, this hierarchy is of very little importance, because the teams carried out different work programs (long stints, short stints, front wing evaluation 2019 version, etc.).
