Max Verstappen (Red Bull) is not the only one to leave Australia without having pocketed a single point. Carlos Sainz Jr. (Ferrari) also suffered a zero point on the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne this Sunday April 10 with a retirement.

The Spaniard confused speed and haste. Motivated by the idea of catching up with a modest ninth place in qualifying, the wearer of number 55 made a mistake when the lights went out by conceding new positions.

Then, while trying to get back into the peloton, a failed braking before the sudden turn of turns 9 and 10 sent him onto the grass. The loss of grip turned into a skid and then a slide towards the gravel trap, from which he could not extricate himself.

But before this exit from the track, the Madrilenian was destabilized by a steering wheel problem. “It’s definitely a difficult weekend to digest, he explained. After everything that happened on Saturday, I was looking forward to the race, but we encountered problems even before the start. On the setup lap towards the grid we had a problem with some buttons on the steering wheel and we had to change it a minute before the formation lap. »

This fatherpine is the cause of the failed flight. “Unfortunately the steering wheel was not well mapped (compared to electronics. Ed.) and the anti-stall was triggered at the start of the formation lap and at the start of the race. »

But when it comes to the spin, Carlos Sainz Jr has only himself to blame. “While trying to recover and overtake, I made a mistake because I pushed too hard and the tires were probably not up to temperature. It's a very difficult weekend because until Q3 everything was going well and from there everything went wrong.

We will carefully analyze this meeting, learn from it and move on. The car was running well, so congratulations to the team and to Charles (Leclerc) for the victory. We will come back stronger at Imola. »

In the championship, the son of double world rally champion Carlos Sainz is in third place, but is already 38 points behind his teammate Charles Leclerc.
